Professional portrait of Dr. Allison Yow

A Physician’s Perspective on Leadership, Technology & Patient Care

Dr. Yow is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician whose career spans clinical medicine, medical education, physician leadership, and clinical informatics. Her clinical foundation is hospital medicine, caring for medically complex and high-acuity patients. This experience gives her a firsthand understanding of clinical workflows—what supports better care, what creates friction, and where thoughtful changes can make a meaningful difference.

Dr. Yow completed her undergraduate studies at Florida Southern College, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. After graduating she went on to earn her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. She then completed a traditional rotating osteopathic internship at the University of Connecticut. The following year she completed a research fellowship at Yale University. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. 

Medical Teaching and Mentorship

Dr. Yow first discovered her love of medical education during her Internal Medicine residency, a passion that led her to complete a Medical Education Certificate alongside her clinical training. She began teaching as a clinical preceptor at Carilion Clinic and later served as an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University–DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she directed the Clinical Cardiology course and taught across the Internal Medicine curriculum. More recently, her teaching has focused on clinical training for nurse practitioner programs and physician education in Epic, helping clinicians translate complex clinical and technological concepts into everyday practice.

Clinical excellence

Dr. Yow’s clinical career reflects a versatile path through diverse care environments. She initially practiced as an outpatient Internist at Carilion Clinic before transitioning to a dual clinical and teaching role at Lincoln Memorial University–DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her expertise expanded into acute care at a remote critical access hospital, where she managed patients in a resource-limited setting. Over the last six years, she has served as a dedicated hospitalist specializing in complex geriatric medicine. In this capacity, she has become an expert in navigating end-of-life care and hospice, facilitating critical goals-of-care conversations to support patients and their families through sensitive transitions.

Clinical Informatics

Dr. Yow came to clinical informatics from the perspective of a frustrated frontline physician in her first job out of residency, seeing firsthand how overwhelming and inefficient the EHR could feel for busy clinicians. That experience led her to pursue additional education in informatics and to become a physician teacher for new Epic implementations, helping colleagues navigate technology more confidently. Her interest in improving clinical workflows ultimately led her into physician informatics leadership and to serving as Associate Chief Medical Informatics Officer, working at the intersection of clinical practice and technology. In that role, she partnered with physicians, Epic, technical teams, and organizational leadership to improve how technology functions within patient care, including leading enterprise-wide implementation of AI-generated clinical and discharge summaries across a six-hospital health system. Her broader informatics work includes clinical validation and beta testing of AI tools, medication reconciliation, Epic order-set development and optimization, physician go-live support, quality and patient-safety initiatives, and multidisciplinary clinical leadership.

Practice Philosophy

Dr. Yow believes effective physician leadership requires credibility at the bedside, curiosity about how systems work, and a willingness to listen to the people who use those systems every day. Whether evaluating an AI-generated clinical summary, improving an Epic workflow, participating in credentialing and quality initiatives, teaching future clinicians, or caring for a hospitalized patient, she returns to the same core questions: Is it accurate? Is it useful? Is it safe? Does it make sense for the people who actually have to use it? And ultimately, does it help us take better care of patients? These questions continue to guide her future work.
